Sitting Ducks

I write this, moments after viewing in Youtube, the confessional video of a young woman, who feels that she has been a willing victim of a cult and a dubious Swamiji. I am shattered- as a person, as a father of a daughter and as a fellow human being. I have no intention of discussing the veracities of the claim or about the genuineness or otherwise of the swamiji in question - there are enough fora and media to discuss this. In fact, the Indian media has found out new ways of minting money through these swamijis and I have no ideas to intrude into their coffers.

What shattered me so much after watching this 28 minutes video was - how anyone can be such a victim through a moment's madness? How come even an educated person be duped under the guise of religion and enlightenment? I was shattered more to get into the shoes of the parents of this victim- I am more concerned and sympathise with them, rather than the woman.

Here is a classic case of a person brought up in a "very orthodox and convnetional family way", who had a wonderful education that went on to continue abroad with a Masters, got married to a man of her choice with the consent of her parents and was leading a very envious life. All these were initialized to a big Zero, when she started to look for enlightenment in life !!! That search directed her to a waiting swamiji, who , she alleges, robbed her of her happiness, subjected her to sexual abuse, resulting in dissolving her family and has left her penniless, virtually on the road !!

Why ??? Is it because of the search of the enlightenment?  Not for a moment I question  the intention of this woman. I am only trying to look behind her thoughts. You had always got whatever you wanted- education, job, husband, life abroad …. Not satiated, you had kept going. Before getting into these spiritual adventures, did you ever speak to your parents about your religion and enlightenment? Did you go through your own scriptures to search for this elusive light? What made you to decide on quitting a lucrative job in US, give up everything and come to an ashram where it is managed by some questionable persons and completely surrender yourselves? You are not alone in being a victim to such searches and such incidents are not new. Even in the 1990s, I had seen a mother crying that her boy studying well and just completed his education at Pilani had suddenly shaved his head and become a sanyasi under a cult, which is not existing now! When I joined a Bank in 1970s, the talk of the bank at that time was a young probationary officer, who had suddenly joined a mutt in Varanasi and refused to receive his salary for the period he served. The Bank, which could not hold his salary, was in a fix as to how to deliver the same to him. There are always searches in life and blindly walking into the waiting hands of crooks is not the answer.

Setting these aside, for a moment, just think whether one would do this, if their family is suffering and he / she is finding it difficult to make both ends meet? I was watching a game show where a contestant cried in ecstasy after winning ten thousand rupees saying that it was a big money for her! At times, even a surfeit of resources lead to desperations.

Even now, when I see the so called Swamijis and Gurus dancing and hugging their followers and the followers rushing to kiss the hands of the Swamis, I let out a shudder and wonder when the bubble will burst. As for as I know, no living Swamiji/Guru has ever been away from controversies- proved or otherwise. So, does this mean that one should not seek peace or enlightenment??

Certainly not. Why are we forgetting our own temples where the time tested Gods are in static form. Whether true or not, atleast, these statues will do no harm even if you pray or dance or even hug them ! It is the crazy mind to seek dynamic immediate stress relievers that has lead us to these pseudo gurus and swamijis , while our century old temples are rotting without even lights.

Such incidents, though very sad should also serve as an eye opener for our coming generation. As we are educated, we should also be aware of such dangers and protect ourselves from being taken for a ride.  I am saddened by this girl's story, but I have more sympathies for the parents of her than the girl as I could visualise the trauma they must also be going through. But, what I am worried is that she still says that if you want to follow somebody choose someone who is worthy of the same! This is where the problem lies- You chose one feeling that it was worthy - only to realize after 6 years that your life has been destroyed. Still believing in your searching capability? God save !

Importance of Training

An Organization's recruitment activity does not end with bringing people on board, as is sadly conceived by many. By carefully sifting through a multitude of resumes and after detailed interactions and filtering, you have only identified the candidates whom you consider could fill the needs of the organization. It is just like carefully selecting a seed and a seed does not grow automatically. You need to choose the right location to sow the seeds in such a way that it is neither too exposed to the sunlight nor completely deprived of the same. Then , periodically water it, apply manures, protect it from pests and after such close monitoring and nurturing, some of the seeds start bearing fruits and some keep on persisting with fruits, every year season after season.

Selected personnel of an organization also has to go through all these phases to become a productive arm of the Org. In modern days, which are more driven by business critical requests, many organizations choose to focus on selection but fail to persist with the same focus of nurturing and developing them, which is also one of the main causes for the attrition.

The training that is being given to the selected staff is as important as the recruitment. In case of freshers, the current college education clearly falling short of relevant working knowledge is by no means preparing the students to take on the expectations of a customer, while the laterals come with different cultures already imbibed into them through their associations with various organizations. It is for you to educate them on what the policy of your concern is, what other popular misnomer are not valid in your own organization etc.,

It is akin to hand holding a girl walking into a household as a daughter in law, where you clarify and explain the culture and expectations of your own house!

This part of Induction training is normally given a Go-by or is given in such urgency that the candidate is all at sea, when the training concludes. In an organization I joined some years back, I was straight posted to the Personnel Administration Dept and attended the induction training after 18 months, by which time I seemed to know more about the Org than the rookie trainer, who had joined recently. Private sectors are more methodical in that they insist on an induction but at times compromise on the duration based on client commitments.

But , the induction I am discussing is not on the basics of technical or domain but about the organization and its culture! I had a very good experience in one of the Companies, where they had a separate one day programme called KYO - Know Your Organization. This day long meet, consisting of many one hour sessions will be addressed by all key operative stakeholders, whom you are likely to interact with during the discharge of your official duties. This includes the Chairman and representatives of key Depts such as HR, Finance, Admin, Technology, Support, Security and each will be explaining the salient activities of their area through a simple presentation and also share the key contact points. This gives the new entrant a warm hand shake idea of the persons and he/she will not hesitate to contact the presentation for SPOC, in case of need.

Most important of these sessions is the PR exercise that one shall be explained about. Over the past few months, I had occasion to visit some Banks, privately run nursing homes and private organizations. Almost at all these places , I was pained to see staff shouting issues, discussing internal matters in front of the waiting customers and at times blaming the organization's shortcomings thereby taking undue advantage too. Some of the common excuses given which could have been avoided are
:
·          I am no more attached to that seat
·          Printer is not working. Come some other day
·          Some staff on leave. Come next week.
·          Manager has to sign this and he is not available- come some other day
·          Your papers are locked in his table draw and that officer is on leave. Come later
In addition, some of their genuine concerns, though they are not of any concern to the customers are also shared. "Eg., It's already 10th and the salary is yet to be credited what more can I do".

If you carefully analyze, most of the excuses tendered are company oriented, for which the customers need not be penalized or exposed to. Like in Airlines, staff must be properly trained and advised not to get personal or emotional over issues and in case of insurmountable situations to refer to the superiors than inflicting further damage to the organization.

Courtesy and service are not only expected at root level, but at all levels. A simple communication from the customer, if not properly acknowledged and updated with the progress of its follow-up, could be construed as an indifference and slight by the company!

It is the management which has to take the cross for these woes and neither the staff, who are ill trained and ill supported, nor the customers who have reposed confidence in you to transact business through you are responsible for such a poor display!

When a friend of mine was asked to handle the dispatch section, he protested saying it was too low a position for his service . The Manager took pains to explain that it is one section through which one could observe and track all exchange and interactions of the Bank with the outside world. Similarly, a Cashier was convinced that despite many departments in a Bank, his is the last point at which a customer is disposed off and he is the Real Face of the bank. If the cashier is good , the customer is happy but if he is otherwise, the customer is not only dissatisfied but also spreads the news, which is more detrimental to the business and reputation of the organization.

So, it is the person who faces the customer is the Face of the Company and he / she needs to be trained for better customer satisfaction.

Lax Security in Banks (Vox Populi)

Despite spate of bank robberies over which the public and media went to town, banks are yet to learn its lesson, it seems. This week alone, I had occasion to witness security holes in two nationalized banks.

In one, the customers could virtually walk through the cash counter, exposing the cashier to risk.

In another , the cash counter was at the doorstep at the entrance. In earlier times, the cash counter will be the last one at the corner most spot, making any heist difficult.

While the public always cry over the spilled milk, the media makes heavy business out of it, it is for the employees and their welfare groups to protest and highlight the security lax to the senior management.

Will the Banks wake up?

Vox Populi

Whenever you open a Newspaper or a news website , you are crowded with incidents of loot, fraud, murder, deceit and many such news which makes one wonder whether are there not anything good happening around? Also, in our day to day life you meet some good Samaritan, a friendly gesture by a stranger, which reaffirms your faith in life and the need to move on. One also gets raw deals which he/she would like to share both to let the steam out and also to educate others, across geography.

A page in Facebook, called 'Thinnai' has been created by me for this purpose and it is accesable at: www.facebook.com/Thinnai

If you have any such thoughts/happenings or you would want to guard yourselves against through others' experience then, you will find this page informative. For everyone's convenience, I wil also share the Vox Populi updates in my blog.

Welcome, relax on my THINNAI and share at : www.facebook.com/Thinnai

Tamilnadu & Civil Services Exams

Results of the 2011 Civil Services examinations are out and 910 out of 2.4 lakhs have been selected for the IAS, IPS and other services.Yes there were 2,43,003 candidates out of which 11,984 cleared the preliminary exams, 2417 candidates were selected for the personality test  out of which 910 have finally made the grade.

Every year when these results are declared, it will send warm, sweet and sour thoughts within me as I too had tried my hand at this sometime in 1982 and went upto the Main exams. I am among the many unsuccessful candidates, whom one of my acquaintances described as a 'wounded soldier'. Very true. Whether you win or lose, after preparing for this, you will really feel like a soldier, realize what planning is, how focus helps, how not to be sucked by distractions and have all the scars on you which will surprisingly be sweet as you lick over the years. Preparations for this exam are like a penance. You have to live, breath, eat and live only with IAS thoughts.

Right from 1980s I have been hearing that it is totally North India oriented, it is biassed etc., and these were also cited as reasons for not churning out enough candidates from Tamilnadu. Setting these aside, the main reason in my opinion is that the IAS culture is more prevalent in North India; people were fed with IAS dreams early from their childhood like our Tamilnadu parents dream of their children getting into MBBS and Engineering. The CBSE syllabus also helps them a lot and most of the NCERT books used in North schools are basic requirements for IAS preparations.

In my opinion, candidates from Tamilnadu are not inferior to anyone and their knowledge, grasp and reproduction are in a way better than others. Only act that we need to tighten is to encourage and provide greater support to take these services. In fact, if you start planning for this exam from the school days, one can crack it ver very easily. If you are strong in two subjects, read the papers regularly and keep your eyes and ears open, half the battle is already won. Of late it is heartening to see that many Doctors, Engineers and technocrats from top institutions like IIT are choosing this ahead of their otherwise lucrative offerings in their own chosen areas of specialization. Also, IAS is one way to arrest the Brain Drain and retain the creamy best within India.

Instead of pointing fingers as to why Tamilnadu is unable to produce IAS officers, let us focus on how to increase our support to the aspirants.

Let us have more training institutions focused on competitive exams. Out television could play a major role in enhancing the general knowledge of the aspirants and could also wean them away from filmy craps under whose clutches the state refuse to free itself .The successful candidates from TN from previous years could also play a vital role in encouraging the aspirants and I am sure such a concerted effort would bring more successful IAS candidates from TN.

Last but not the least, as is evident from the competition statistics given earlier, not all who compete can be successful, however sincere their efforts are. Remember it is not an examination for a person to be declared Passed or Failed. It is a selection process by which candidates are ranked and as per the number of vacancies, people are inducted into the cadre. A person who is next to the last successful candidate could also be as good as others, but only the competition would have edged him out. But, the silver lining is that the sincere preparation for this exam also  helps one so well in developing  all round knowledge, personality and attitude that any other competitive exams would be much easier for the candidate and invariably he/she will land up in some job or the other. So, one has nothing to lose in preparing for this exam.
Some interesting tidbits I gathered from some tweets on the Civil services exam, 2011:
·         Women top Civil Service exams, IITian come third
·         Of the 910 finally selected, 715 are male and 195 female
·         A candidate ranking 287 has blamed RSS for such a performance!
·         50 from Tamilnadu and 10 from J & K Qualify for Civil Services this year
·         3 Muslims in Top 50

My Century

When I visited my blog today, I was happy. I had reasons to be happy on many counts.

I am happy that I have not made any updates for over a month.

I am happy that involuntarily, I have detected some pattern of my activities and thoughts. It appears April is an otherwise busy month, which has been keeping me occupied & kept me away from my blog. It does not mean that I had nothing to share or express. My Blog master has more than ten topics under 'draft' all under
different stages.

Happenings over the past week gave me different thoughts. Some angered me, some pacified me and some kept me thinking. All of these gave enough fodder for me to share. But, somehow, it never took me to the stage of culmination, where from it was ready to share.

There have been occasions when I had made more than one post in a day, many posts in a month and no posts at all. This irregularity helped to convince myself that I do not rush to convey and at the same time do not hesitate to share if I had multiple thoughts even on the same day.

Incidentally, I also noticed that I have made 99 posts so far and this one will be my hundredth! I could by no stretch of imagination compete with Sachin but here I notice that I too had a yawning gap between the 99th and 100th posts!!

On noticing this milestone , I went back to my posts and realized that there have been many feedbacks, comments , advices and suggestions all of which I respect and am attempting to implement, wherever feasible.

There were people who were impressed, enhanced inputs to my posts, suggested on the frequency of posts, shared how they have implemented my thoughts all of which humbled me.

My initial thoughts, when I started this canvas two years ago, was to "pen my thoughts- capture my kaleidoscopic mood swings and incidentally welcome visitors and their valuable feedback". The ideals enshrined on the fly has been mostly met, I believe.

In between I also went back to the reading room to know more about 'blogging', where I learnt about the frequencies of posts, monetizing the blog etc., Thankfully, there are varied opinions on the number of posts - some had suggested once in a month, some many in a day and some whenever you feel like. Nothing is overdose neither anything is underplay. For instance, Amitabh posts daily, almost publishing his public
diary. But, all the feedback are taken in the right earnest and many lessons have also been learnt.

Fortunately, I have no intention of monetizing my blog and so my focus in that area was
minimal and only academic.

When there was a drought of posts, I was thrilled when some queried whether everything is fine at my end !
This canvas is a very creative medium for me to exclusively express my thoughts and if the visitors turned well wishers and vice versa were concerned about it, my day is made. I now have a commitment to
improve myself as my thoughts are no more private and so I have a social responsibility too.

I take this opportunity to thank all those who had visited and provided feedback, those silent editors who read but held back their feedback, those who encouraged and those who implemented some of my suggestions.

Though the idea when I created this blog was not to go after audience, I am truly overwhelmed by your responses, suggestions, encouragement and support.

Expanding on these, I have also created a page in Facebook called "Vox Populi", to which I invite you all and share your ideas too.

Shortly, I also propose to come back with some announcement , which I am sure will enthuse you and I look forward to your continued support.

Thank you, friends, for keeping me company, in my post retiral journey!!

I enjoyed walking holding your hands and I have miles to go!
