Tirupathi, 2011

Normally a ready traveler, I am always hesitant to visit Thirupathi, just for the challenge of the crowd and the uncertainty about the waiting time for the dharshan. I set out on a day long trip to the holy hills, egged on by my co-brother who introduced a good driver, but thankfully, he made the day better.

Being early Feb, the notorious heat of AP was yet to set in and I was thanking my stars for one of the quickest decisions;  to undertake this trip now, rather than in Apr/May. Some of the things that astonished me was the crowd that gathers every day and the administration's dynamic methods to meet the ever increasing demands of the devotees.

To beat the touts, I was told, even the daily routes of the Queue pattern is changed ! Separate lines for senior citizens, people with infants, the trekkers ... make it evident that the think tank of the crowd management is up on their toes all the time. The compartments built for the crowd to wait are very spacious and for the crowd that steams in daily , the maintenance is laudable. Even the normally avoidable public conveniences at such crowded spots are kept tidy and clean.

Few areas where the temple management could focus to improve are the areas of post dharshan. The crowd , so well controlled and managed until then , is let lose after the dharshan. The place near the hundies is waiting for disasters, with the ground below very uneven with sudden steps, none to regulate the crowd and with the old and children shove around, a stampede will not be a surprise. The ground needs to be leveled and a single file queue will resolve the issue.

While there are enough notifications about the non admission of Cell phones and cameras, the confiscation of water bottles, even before entering the temple appears to be baseless. There are days when people stand in the line for hours after crossing this point and there is a real threat of people starving out with parched throats, particularly in the months of April to June. The authorities need to provide clean water to quench the thirst, after this point. Also, there could be a notice indicating that water will not be allowed, so that the devotees could satiate their need before the water bottle is thrown out.

On a day, where there was no crowd, I had to spend nearly three hours before the dharshan. One wonders as to what will be the waiting period during the school vacation and festival times! After undergoing these, the devotee gets a dharshan for some 20 seconds and the faces of those coming out after these seconds are to be seen to be believed! So much satisfaction, glow in their faces - very clearly indicating their readiness to face any challenge- from the onion prices to school admissions to tax issues .

A visit to Tirupathi is generally believed to bring lot of solace to the mind. It is this belief , it appears, that is driving people to spend so many hours for so few seconds of darshan !

Bucket List

After reading Pritish Nandy's blog post on bucket list, I am tempted to summarize my own. For my own clarity, let me record that this is a list of activities that I would love to do anytime during the period of my existence. Though this list has always been there at the back of my mind, this is an attempt to consolidate the thoughts. This list is not in any order of priorities and is as it occurred. I am sure this is set to grow:

• Support the youth in pre recruitment preparations

• Help in management activities of any organization that requires improvement in process and discipline

• Deliver meaningful lectures/speeches

Some places I enjoy visiting in India - Part 1

My favorite choice of visit at any time of the year is a hill station.

Kodai is always my favourite place, ever since I started visiting it in 1979. The hill station with many virgin places at that time has come a long way since then. But, still it holds a special place in my heart. As you start climbing the hill, the temperature changes pleasantly and when you reach the place, you get a full blast of chill air, depending on the time of your visit. It has such beautiful places to walk around such as Coakers walk, around the lake - watch out it is nearly 12+ kms- so start early, if you set out in the evening. Recently, we also discovered a beautiful trekking place called Vattakanal and Dolphin nose. To satiate my sweet tooth, home made chocolates are available aplenty here.

Ooty, also called Ootacamund, is another beautiful hill station in South India and I used to alternate between this and Kodai every year. More crowded and commercial than Kodai, the place has very good picnic spots and the commercial street is my favorite place for evening stroll. The botanical garden is a delight to visit and the toy train, can be tried just for the sake of record once, as it is very crowded and also requires better travel facilities.

At both these hill stations, I have tried various hotels and TTDC remains my favorite, with traditional food and hospitality!

Why do I Blog?

I was wondering as to why, of late, I take refuge into my amateurish writing skills to express myself. Where was this urge, so far, to put these thoughts and how were they given vent to ?

First and foremost, I have now more spare time at my disposal and I can afford to think on these thoughts and give a shape. These thoughts have of course surfaced periodically but the urge to convert them into full grown paragraphs have been snuffed out by paucity of time, as I had been living my literary life, more as  Irwing Wallace's Sunday Gentleman! But then why blogging?

Blogging does not demand any investment, as I create my own space at no extra cost.

I don't need to worry about publishing my thoughts and about returned unaccepted posts from the publishers. It gets published automatically and is always available.

It gives me a good opportunity to convert my primitive thoughts into an organized cluster of sentences.

I don't need to worry about the acceptance of the views expressed. It is more like my personal journal and only a straying soul is likely to stumble across my views and thoughts.

Provides good opportunities to learn and sharpen my vocabulary , frequently refer to the dictionary and beef up my own lexicon!

Last , but not the least, it enables me to think clearly, whenever I get up early , at the unearthly hour of 4 AM, as I do today!

Sure I have more, but reasons enough , to continue pecking on the keyboard !

War against Cancer

There seems to be a constant battle against cancer, as is evident from the various news we hear and see, periodically. While we are able to control and cure cancer to an extent, we still appear to be waiting for a breakthrough in prevention.

But the news of increased radiation through cell phone towers, prolonged interaction with cell phone seem to create some excitements and recently the spread of bacteria through the ATM keyboards is also opening other doors. It is reported that the ATM kiosks and the touch screens are viewed with suspicion as these were found to contain virus and germs normally found on toilet seats. It is also reported that some faecal bacteria is found in the pre-packaged batter normally used for instant food and the origin is suspected to be the use of unclean water. One hopes that such relentless battle from all sides could very soon lead to good news on this front.

While there is a hunt for the hitherto unknown cause, let us from our part refrain from inviting this dreaded disease, by abhorring cigarettes and alcohol.

Support for sexual advancement?

There were some reports in the Times of India over the last couple of days , which I would first like to share and here are some excerpts:

"... twelve year old children will be allowed to have non penetrative sex with others their age, according to the draft protection of Children From Sexual Offences Bill, 2010 which has been sent to the States for their views by the Ministry of women and child development...The bill also seeks to introduce a gradation in the age of consensual non-penetrative sex (12-14 years and 14-16 years) against the existing age of consent for sex which is 16 years! ...

While a senior official of the ministry confirmed that the bill has been sent to the states, the law minister Veerappa Moily said he was not aware of it ? He said - Twelve years is anyway not a proper age for a sexual act....

Under the existing law, if two 12 year-olds get physical and if one child's parent complains, the other can be pulled up by the Juvenile Justice Board. The panel felt such minor things should be decriminalized, said Aparna Bhat, a Supreme court lawyer who was part of a National Commission for Protection of Child Rights group that drafted the latest bill.

Raj Mangal, chairperson of the Delhi Child Welfare Committee, said the bill could be disastrous if it comes into effect. "Twelve, given the mind and maturity of a child, is not the age to give consent. In the name of decriminalizing , you can't keep sexual acts of two children out of the notice of the authorities, she added...."

Fist I have few questions:

• Is this supposed to be a Child Protection Bill? How this revision protects?

• Are we trying to protect the children in general or trying to protect some children, who are currently affected by the current age limit of 16 ?

• What is the immediate need for this?

• Will the authorities concerned, who want this revision, come out with data on how many of the children have been affected by the existing rule or by the lack of the suggested revision?

• By passage of time, say in the next 5 to 6 years, will there be another revision which could change the age limit to 8-10 years from the proposed 12- 14 years ? What is the long term vision of the Government on this?

• Last but not the least, what are those "Minor things"?

Where are we leading our children to ? In the name of protection, are we leading our children to indulgence without any fear of legal ramifications? Are there not more important supportive bills that our children need, such as for education, dwelling units, child labour..?

At the age of 12, considered to be impressionable age, I have heard many 'moral' stories from my parents and we used to have 'moral instructions ' sessions in schools. It is hard to digest this happening in the land of Rama (the symbol of Eka Pathini) and Bhagavat Gita! But now by this act, are we trying to let them loose? Will Bharathiyar, who was a strong advocate of the emancipation of women be happy at this enhanced freedom ? He should be stirring in his grave.

By the by, who from other states is involved in such decisions? For such important decisions, how is the people of this country, of such diverse culture, consulted? It would be interesting to know the reaction of our tamilian gaurdians to this proposal. The report has also quoted other countries such as " the age of consent in US is between 16 and 18 years, depending on the state they live in; in the UK, it is 16 and Spain has one of the lowest ages of consent , at 13 years..."

Are we trying to beat everyone in the game- nice attempt to stay ahead of others !

Also it is amusing to observe that we selectively ape the practice of other countries, wherever it is convenient for us. We ape them for free sex, in our comical attire of full suit and tie in a tropical country. But, when it comes to working for the full hours in the office, punctuality, adherence to norms, road discipline, cleanliness etc., we create our own Indian culture !

Indeed, our young generation, has a very challenging period ahead. Jai Hind
